I bred my females in season to my males on the same turn they were in season, but when I pressed the breed button it told me that they weren't in season

you may have pressed it twice by mistake, when you do that it says not in season because the first click performed the action

Happens to me too, when the game lags when you are breeding a dog at the same time a breeding doesn't take, the game will skip giving you the breeding failed message. Instead the game will tell you that your female isn't in heat.
